I know. I am like the last person on earth to post this online, but seriously, the new Lady Gaga video is really good and like intense and creepy and crazy and fifth element meets the scene in Star Wars where Leia performs for Jabba the hut meets like all sci-fi ever, with a shot of McQueen fashions and killer choreography and white slim jim guy hats and latex and sparkler bras. It's fucking incredible and as a total homo I LOVE IT.

Favorite parts= how pretty she looks when she's crying, the whole burning bed/ polar bear coat look, the red outfit dance number especially at the end when they're all clapping like they're doing the horah, and of course the sparkler bra at the very end.

I'm writing a paper on Japanese New Religion, specifically one called Princess of the Dragon Palace, it's a pretty weird mix of ancient Japanese spiritual beliefs and mythology, Western deities (Jesus & Judaism- identifies the Japanese people as a lost tribe of Isreal, um okay) , and feminism. I'm particularly into this quote by the head shamaness, Fujita Himiko,

“Man is human, but woman is divine. Men therefore should respect women and learn from them. If a man tries to lord is over women and treat them contemptuously at home, at work, or at recreation, he is far removed from god and will not receive passport to paradise, no matter how pious his religious beliefs may be. I should be writing a paper right now (which was actually due a week and a half ago) about whether or not NPR has a liberal bias (It sometimes does, but who cares) and instead I think I'm gonna just write here about some of the things I like about NPR (because I am your mom).

I like the soothing cadence of the peoples' voices. My teacher works for WNYC and she has such a nice calm british voice. She called me Charles the first day, because that's my real name and all, and I didn't correct her because it sounds and feels really good when british ladies call you Charles (try it sometime.)

I like the show "Tell Me More" it is hosted by Michel Martin who is this really great lady who used to be a big time reporter and now has her own show where they discuss the day's issues and culture and often focus on minority issues. Michel has the aforementioned cadence to her voice but she has more of a sense of humor than many of the other hosts, I think she would be a fun person to have dinner with, she would make me feel smart but not judge me for drinking more than her. I listen to this show online almost every day.
I also like "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross because Terry is the HBIC of NPR, she is a hot lesbian who has all these great guests on her show and a very casual conversational style of interviewing people. She had Tracy Morgan on a couple weeks ago and he cried!! She (and Michel) talks about gay shit more than most other NPR shows. I like it when people talk about gay things.

I also like "This American Life" but really who doesn't so...

I LOVE that it rally makes me feel in touch with my inner upper-middle-class mom, I mean Hello they have a full album preview of Norah Jones's new CD. I LOVE NORAH JONES and I love being your mom.

So go listen to NPR and listen to Norah Jones and shop at Whole Foods and drive a Volvo and join the mom revolution.

There's not much that I can say about Michael Jackson, his life or his untimely death, that hasn't already been said a million times by a million people- both smarter and dumber than myself. I can say that as a young lad I was quite a fan of his music, as were most people. My #1 jam back in the day was Man in The Mirror. He also allegedly (but more likely than not) did a lot of really fucked up things, and he certainly had a lot of troubles in his life- he experienced more and had more pressures on him at a young age than most of us ever will.
Michael Jackson is an icon who will live on far past his time on earth. My thoughts go out to his family, especially Janet who I've been jamming to a lot lately.

The trailers for the two movies I'm anticipating the most premiered this week. I love when trailers come out for movies you've been so excited for, and they look fucking awesome.

First is Nine:

I have been looking forward to this movie since I heard that it was Rob Marshall's (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, only famous person I know) next project. It looks absolutely amazing! I was pretty nervous about some of the casting (Fergie, Kate Hudson) but it looks like I have nothing to worry about. Fergie's song in the trailer sounds excellent. I feel like such a fan-boy right now. I can already predict that Nine is going to be my musical wet dream come true for 2009

Second is Precious:
Precious was one of the big hits at Sundance this year (where it was titled Push: based on the novel by Sapphire). It stars Mo'nique, Mariah Carey, and newcomer Gabby Sidibe. It looks absolutely heartbreaking and Mo'nique has gotten rave reviews and Oscar-buzz for her performance as Precious's abusive mother. Mariah glammed it way down for this one in order to play a welfare councilor. I expect this to be my favorite non-Nine movie of the year.

I am in such a mood to BLOG! Probably because it is 3 am and I haven't started my 5 page draft that's due in 9 hours... (when I say 9 hours it sounds like I have plenty of time, but when I say noon it sounds like a disaster.) I have been watching amateur Youtube Bratz Doll Music Videos for the past hour or more. Before that I downloaded the leak of the supposed new Courtney Love album that's been in the works for... ever? What I downloaded is actually a compilation of leaked tracks and demos, and it is a very very rough cut. The album is currently called "Nobody's Daughter," I think there was a point when it was being called "How Dirty Girls Get Clean." I like the name "Nobody's Daughter" because "...Dirty Girls" reminds me of novelty soaps my mom would get as gifts from her Sparkle Hour friends. I would like to think that my whole life is made up of Sparkle Hours. I would like to think that, but I would be thinking lies.

I am, as usual, unable to think up something cool to write about, but this blog needs updating and so I'm just going to tell both of you who read this about how I spent Wednesday, April 8th. First I had to give a presentation about an artist in one of my clases, I did it on Neko Case because I love her. After that I didn't have newspaper because of Judaism and stuff (Happy Pesach!), which is good because I've grown to hate being on the newspaper (the only good part is going out for drinks afterwards and complaining about it.) So I did some of the simple things (errands) that make me really happy. So instead of that shit I did fun things! First I went to Le Pain Quotidien for an overpriced but super delicious lunch. I am so addicted to going to Le Pain and eating and drinking at least 3 Iced teas and reading my book. This week (and last week) I'm reading a book called The Married Man by Edmund White. It's about these two men with AIDs living in Paris, in the late 80s/early 90s, It could be a real downer, but White is a really great writer and manages to capture the beauty in day-to-day life. His descriptions are absolutely gorgeous- if a bit verbose at times. Anyways, I definitely recommend the book. After lunch I walked around the Tribeca area and wound up at Barnes and Noble where I read magazines for at least 2 hours. Then I went to Whole foods and bought Prosciutto and Mozzarella and olives and had a lovely Antipasto dinner.

Essentially- Today I was a TOTAL yuppie, going from the upscale chain "french" cafe to the Big-Box book store to the fancy-pants "organic" food superstore.
And It was such an awesome day. I want to be a yuppie forever (sans the P part which stands for Professional, and I have no interest in doing anything professionally.)

I've been just as bad at posting. Total winter blahs over here. What is the theme of this blog again, anyways? Maybe it should just be a back and forth between each other. Or not, I dunno.

I registered for next semester's classes last night. Editing, producing, east asian geography, web art&design, intellectual heritage II. Weird I'm gonna be a senior. Kinda looking forward to being finished with school. This kid today, who I've sorta made friends with in my film class, told me his idea for his final project. He wanted to make a movie, cause you can make an art project or just write a paper. I am uninspired/brain dead so I'll probably just write a paper. Anyways, his idea was soooooo generic cliche student film: girl goes to frat party, drinks, does drugs, gets raped. the end. What do you say when someone asks you what you think about that? I said "that's messed up." It sort of seemed like i was commenting about the rape, not the entire idea.

The whole film major thing has given me a complex where I judge all the other kids really harshly but don't do anything myself because I'm scared of being just as awful as them.

Also I sort of accidentally bought a film camera from ebay, but then realized it's 8mm not 16mm so unusable because no one uses 8mm since like 1930. Ebay is so tricky and its a fun competition to win the bids but then you get caught up until you've won something you dont even want! I hate making mistakes like that.

Well that's my life. Actually, tomorrow and saturday I am being an usher at the philly film festival so I'll get to see a bunch of movies for free. Speaking of which, today in class I saw two great movies, totally would recommend The Day I Became a Woman- it's an iranian narrative 3 stories of women, and A Man Vanishes(1967)- a japanese documentary/semi narrative about a man who goes missing. Both were really really beautiful as well as having captivating stories.

I know. I'm the worst at updating regularly (I've been saying that a lot lately- "The Worst" ie: "oh, You're the worst!" or "those little ribbon stickers people put on their cars to bring the troops home or whatever are the worst!" or "Real Housewives of Missoula is totally the worst!")

Anywaysss, I don't really have anything of value to say (do i ever?) I had a fun spring break, relaxing at home and a little bit of frolicking in Richmond with the old River City Krew. Now I'm back in NY, apartment hunting with the roommates. We found a place today that is really great and we're putting in the app tomorrow, so cross your fingers please. I've been in a really cranky-weird mood lately, also I haven't gotten shit done, which only makes me feel worse. Some things do make me feel better though. The Big Love season finale was Sunday and although I'm sad that I have to wait a million years for the next season, I'm happy that there is something so beautiful and amazing in the world.

Other things that have been bringing me great joy of late:

Snow Day

Today was a snow day! I haven't had a snow day since high school and I definitely needed one today. Despite the fact that I absolutely hate snow, I really wasn't ready to go back to school today. My weekend was pretty crazy: Friday night I went to dinner with Julia at Yaffa Café, which is a really fun place decorated like (how I imagine) Stevie Nicks' boudoir. Then we went to a Black Metal themed Cooper Union party in Bed-Stuy (where Biggie grew up) In full black-metal corpse paint.

It was really fun, it reminded me of house parties in Richmond. Speaking of RVA, I'm going there in a couple of weeks and I can't wait, I really miss everyone there.

So back to my weekend. On Saturday night I overindulged waay too much and it can all be summed up by saying that at 1:30 in the morning (I know, so early) I found myself demanding a McFlurry at a McDonalds in the financial district and then vomiting in the back of a cab. My friend Ryan basically saved my life and I am eternally grateful. Yesterday I was super sick all day, and I think I might have been suffering from a stomach bug on top of just recovering from the night before.

Today I have just lounged around, ate PB&J at Le Pain Quotidien (my new fave lunch, although i may be burning out on it) and wandered around the neighborhood, freezing my ass off and taking pictures of the snow. I wish that all the snow would be gone tomorrow, because I really hate snow after it's more than a day old. My major discovery of the day today is that I live just a few blocks away from Palazzo Chupi! Schnabel-alert! Schnabel-Alert!

Hamlet 2

I never got around to seeing Hamlet 2 in theaters, but I got to watch it last night and it was awesome! Non-stop laughs. It was probably a combo of my expectations being lowered for no specific reason and that it was comic brilliance.

Steve Coogan is a laugh and a half as a pathetic but enthusiastic high school drama teacher. He decides to stage an original work after he hears that the drama department has been cut from the school's budget and curriculum. His play is a musical sequel to Shakespeare's Hamlet in which absurdity, obscenity, blasphemy, and nonsense collide to offend the city of Tucson. It sounds kind of lame when I read this over but it's not. The film had me giggling from the opening credits.

Ok. So I have asked just about everyone I know, and it seems that my mom and I are the only people who watch Big Love on HBO! WHY!?! It is by far the best show on TV. It has more twists than lost, but is much more believable and relatable- even though I am more likely to be stranded on a tropical island than I am to join a Polygamist FLDS sect. This season (the third season) is the best yet, as the prophet of Juniper Creek (the compound where the crazies live) is on trial, and the Hendricksons (the main family, who live i the burbs) are considering adding a fourth wife. The characters are so unique and well thought out and the writing is so rich and beautiful. It will make you laugh, cry, and scream all in one episode. This show is worth your time. Believe me, please! Watch it on HBO sunday nights or online or something, you won't regret it.

Here is a brilliant clip from last season with Rhonda, the manipulative escaped child bride from the compound, singing "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" on a maury-esque talk show. This scene exemplifies the show's brilliant use of music, as well as it's eery, dark, and humorous tone. This girl is singing a bubblegum song about marital bliss despite the fact that she just recently escaped being married to a 70 year old man. So good. So fucking good.

Yesterday I had the honor of attending the inauguration of our 44th President, Barack Hussein Obama. It was truly one of the most exciting moments of my life. We were so incredibly lucky, this past weekend our family friend, who was on the Inauguration committee gave us platform tickets. When my sisters, Júlía, and I arrived it turned out that we were going to be seated directly behind the podium, about fifteen rows away from the president and his family. It was so amazing! So the Golden Globes just happened. Slumdog Millionaire won for best screenplay, director, and picture, making it the official Oscar front-runner and making me very happy. I must say I am really bummed that Milk was barely nominated at all. It's really pretty ridiculous. Oh well, here's a picture of the beautiful Freida Pinto arriving at the Globes tonight, perfect color for her, she is STUNNING! I couldn't stop gushing about her, and my sister couldn't stop gushing about Sally Field. She has like sex fantasies about Sally Field.

I hope everybody's day was amazing! Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, and Today was a great one, It was my first thanksgiving in my new house and the meal was delicious! There was an Arrested Development marathon on G4, and my mom and I went to see "MILK" this evening. I cannot encourage everyone enough to GO SEE MILK!!! It Is so amazing and inspiring, it almost made me cry. (which I don't do at movies. EVER) You should also rent the documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk" which tells basically the same story and is really well done.

I'd also like to add that I am extremely Thankful that our very own HANNAH is coming back to the USA in 2 weeks and a day!!! Can't wait!

So, Peaches. Sigh. Where to begin. Back when we were 15 we loved Peaches. She had a funny name and was British and in TeenVogue and had neat clothes. We even made a weird tribute video to her. To which her friend Fifi actually sent me a message on YouTube, followed by my becoming ~Myspace friends~ with Peaches herself (!!?!). She even put the video on her page!! She was going to move to the US and go to NYU and I just knew I was going to be friends with her.

And then I got my own life and stuff and didn't move to New York. But years later I still had a subscription to Nylon and she kept popping up in there. And now here she is, writing a column for Nylon. And she could not be more annoying!! Here's some examples:

"Most people who know me know I don’t follow fashion. I mean, I just dyed the tips of my hair blue for God’s sake. I hate stars who look totally overstyled, like Victoria Beckham; give me Courtney Love, with her babydoll nighties and ripped fishnet tights, any day. For me, fashion is about pushing boundaries. My comments:

A) If she's not into fashion she wouldn't write for Nylon or know who Viv Westwood is.

B) If Nylon is a movement for anything, it's consumerism.

C) Name-drop much? Ever heard of trying to hard?

The reader comments on Nylon's website are scathing. Gawker can't stop making fun of her. Myself, I'm torn. I want to like her, I still would enjoy meeting her. But she's a terrible writer and possibly an idiot. Oh well. My subscription to Nylon ran out a few months back and I don't live in NYC so maybe I should get over it.

(ps. In case you don't know, Peaches is the Daughter of Bob Geldoff, an old British pop star who most recently organized the Live8. She's a brit socialite.)

I was looking for some B-movies to write a paper on for this class I'm taking. In the process I found a lot of movies I didn't want to write about but that I do really want to see! Here is one of them:Candy(1968): Don't be confused, its not about heroin or starring Heath Ledger. Read this carefully- it's a psychedelic '60s adaptation of a bizarre adaptation of the French philosopher Voltaire's classic (but bizarre) work, Candide. I actually had to read Candide in high school (in French, ugh) and though I hated it, I found the influences in Candy to be very interesting. There is a lot of absuridity, sex jokes, weird shit going on. Candide (the Voltaire book), also has so much weird shit, syphilis outbreaks, a lady's bottom being eaten, people disappearing/dying and then returning, lots of traveling, etc. Candy from the movie is a vacant but sexy lady and all these dudes want to do her. It seems like rape cause she's never into it, but she's not all that against it either. She's more like, oh! what! i dunno.. ok. Exploitation, yes. It was '68 though.

This isn't really a B-movie, it had a decent budget and stars such as Ringo Starr and Marlon Brando but it was a flop and pretty poorly recieved in the 60s. It's made some money in rentals since then, but I haven't found a single positive review of it online.

I was lucky enough to attend an event with one of the most exciting people in America last week. No I'm not talking about Cynthia Nixon's hot piece of a partner, Christine Marinoni...

I'm talking about Michelle Obama!

I am volunteering for the Obama campaign and last week there was a closed roundtable discussion here in Richmond, hosted by Michelle herself! She spoke about the economy, and how Obama will lower taxes for the bottom 95% of Americans, as opposed to McCain who wants to cut taxes for the top percents. She talked with four inspiring local women about their financial burdens, especially as they relate to their families, and explained how Barack's administration would help them. Michelle has a very natural presence and I could see her running for public office. I just don't get it when people say that she comes off as mean or harsh, she seems very nice and funny in real life. She made a joke about the stage set-up (couches and fake ficus trees) by saying, "Here we are, on The View."

Michelle and the local women were also joined by First Lady of VA Anne Holton, and the inspiring Lily Ledbetter. It was a really great experience and I'm so glad I got to be there. I'll be doing more volunteering for the campaign this week, and hopefully I'll get to see Barack speak soon. It's kind of fun being in a Swing State!

It had a good message about the importance of tolerance and understanding. It also featured a cameo from Lance Bass (as does Tropic Thunder, he is currently Hollywood's go to gay.)

The Moral of the story is that I found my I.D. And now I'm watching the Tori Spelling classic Lifetime movie Mother May I Sleep With Danger?, and well, all's well that ends well!

FredFlare meets Real Life

The first fredflare store opens October 24th! I'm so pissed I can't go to the opening! They are also having a sample sale this Saturday (tomorrow!), and they have the best sample sales. The store is in Brooklyn, NY. 131 Meserole Ave, to be exact, which is just a bit north of where their old warehouse with the hearts was. I'm mega jealous of BKLYN residents tomorrow. I would totally apply to work there if I was closer.
